The VW Group is currently developing a compact electric hatchback called the ID.1. It is expected to be the most affordable model in the brand’s ‘ID’ range of EVs and will go on sale in Europe in the next 5 years.

Reports suggest that the ID.1 could be introduced in the Indian market, albeit with a few modifications. It is said that the Indian version would be a sub-4 meter car based on the MEB21G platform. Skoda will lead the project and might collaborate with a local brand to co-develop the car.

According to a recent report, Skoda is already in talks with Mahindra to jointly develop a budget EV based on the MEB21G platform. It makes sense as Mahindra has secured the AP550 electric motor and unified battery technology from VW for its INGLO-based electric SUVs.

It is said that the MEB21G platform could be shared between VW, Skoda and Mahindra in order to achieve economies of scale. While the underpinnings will be the same, each carmaker will design and build their own top hats.

That being said, there has been no confirmation from Skoda, VW or Mahindra regarding this deal.
