There's Over $15 Million in Prize Money Up For Grabs at This Year's Indy 500

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway just announced a bunch of plans it has for the month of May leading up to the 2020 Indianapolis 500. The biggest nugget of news is undoubtedly the massive increase in prize money for the winning team, adding up to over $15 million.

The NTT IndyCar series has increased the Indy 500 purse by $2 million from last year, pushing the total prize money to $15,090,536. According to the series, the purse “consists of Indianapolis Motor Speedway and NTT IndyCar Series awards, plus other designated and special awards.” Last year, race winner Simon Pagenaud took home $2,669,529 from the total 2019 purse of $13,090,536—around 20 percent.

In other Indy 500 news, there’s going to be a new qualifying layout that allows for multiple attempts for drivers during the Last Row Shootout rather than just one—a change that came based on feedback from fans. There’s also going to be a 45-horsepower increase for the cars, and more television coverage during race weekend. New sponsors (including us, Road & Track Magazine) and a slew of upgrades for the track itself will insure fans attending the race will have the time of their lives.

We can’t wait for the green flag to drop.
