George Russell: Williams got me into a 'mess'

George Russell was frustrated with Williams for sending him out in traffic again during Q1 in Russia, but admits it wasn’t as costly this time.

The Brit was caught up in traffic last weekend at the Singapore GP during the opening qualifying session, making it difficult for him to set the fastest lap he could.

Russell questioned Williams over team radio when he again found himself among traffic for his final Q1 run in Sochi, and despite being eliminated as expected, he admits that the situation wasn’t as bad this time around.

“No not really, but I think we didn’t compromise [ourselves] as much as we did last weekend, it was just a bit frustrating,” he told reporters when asked about the scenario repeating itself.

“On the out-lap fighting guys ahead of us, fighting guys trying to overtake me behind me, it was just a bit of a mess.

“But for whatever reason the tyres were in good shape regardless, and we got a good lap in.”

Russell’s fastest time was only half a second slower than Kimi Raikkonen’s, so the Brit accepts that it was a “good session”.

“I think we can be pretty pleased with that,” he explained.

“We knew this would be a difficult circuit for us, much worse than we were in Hungary and Singapore as expected, and with these long straights it’s not great for us.

“But yeah, I think that was a good session.”
