The GLIE is a long wheelbase 3 Series with an illuminated grille. No, you can't have one

It can seem like barely a day passes without another BMW grille in the news. This time round, it’s not doing itself any favours. The new 3 Series Gran Limousine Iconic Edition features something called an ‘Iconic Glow Kidney Grille’, which uses LEDs to illuminate the front end and give the model “a unique radiance”.

That’s just the start for this intriguing new addition to the 3 Series line-up. Built in Chennai exclusively for the Indian market, the Gran Limousine Iconic Edition is significantly larger than the standard G20; with 110mm added to the wheelbase, it’s actually 4,819mm long. Which, to be fair to the current 3 Series, it carries off ok – but rather like those of us carrying a few extra lockdown pounds, it’s hard to avoid looking at that bit extra round the middle once you’ve seen it. If you can take your eyes off the Glow, that is.

The newly extended interior has been suitably jazzed up, too. The GLIE benefits from Vernasca leather, a crystal effect gearknob – in a 3 Series! – a rear seat headrest cushion and a coat hanger with base carrier. There’s also ambient lighting, a panoramic roof and ‘Welcome Light Carpet’ for maximum sense of occasion. It’ll be offered either as a 330Li or 320Ld, both engine as they’re found in the standard wheelbase 3 Series with 258hp and 190hp respectively.

Vikram Pawah, BMW Group’s President in India, said: “The 3 Series Gran Limousine has set a new standard in luxury with its elongated design, enhanced space, luxurious comfort and dynamic performance. We are delighted to present the new BMW 3 Series Gran Limousine Iconic Edition with an enhanced, unique and captivating character. It delivers sheer driving pleasure and indulges in superlative luxury, making it a perfect choice for individuals as well as their families.” If ever you needed further proof of just how important certain Asian markets now are for the European manufacturers, the GLIE provides it. On sale across India now, the Gran Limousine Iconic Edition costs 5,350,000 rupees for the petrol (£51,800) or 5,490,000 rupees – currently £53,200 – for the diesel.
