The race for ever large wheels is over, according to Marc Lichte, Audi’s head of design. Wheels won’t get much bigger than the 23-inchers on the RS Q8.
Wheels bigger than that “make no sense” with vehicles the size of modern vehicles, Lichte told Motor Authority. If anything, with EVs on the horizon, cars will only get smaller, so bigger wheels won’t be a necessity like they were on SUVs.
“Package wise, I would say this is definitely close to the limit,” said Lichte. The designer did admit, though, that he’s happy to see wheels the size they are.
He argued that it’s something designers always put in their drawings that has always been dropped along the road to production. So, although giant wheels come with some compromise, they are attractive. They make a car feel more special and that’s a trick Audi Sport uses to ensure that RS models are even more aggressive than their regular counterparts.
