The 2020 Mercedes-AMG CLA35 Shooting Brake Is a Practical 302-HP Rocket Ship

Another day, another cool wagon revealed by an automaker that doesn’t want to sell it in the US. The latest culprit is Mercedes-AMG, which has just taken the wraps off its CLA35 Shooting Brake. It’s the long-roof version of the company’s CLA35 sedan, equipped with the same engine and 4Matic all-wheel drive system. At least it’s nice to look at.

Aside from the trunk area, not much has changed in the transition from sedan to shooting brake. The turbocharged four-cylinder power unit is identical, pushing out 302 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is the same too, allowing a sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

Like the CLA35 sedan, the shooting brake gets five drive modes: Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Individual. A speed-sensitive electric power steering rack, four-piston front brake calipers, and a dual-mode exhaust system are standard. Options include an adaptive damping system with three settings and AMG’s Track Pace data logging program.

Like most cool wagons, Mercedes hasn’t given any indication the CLA35 Shooting Brake will join the sedan in America’s lineup. Not terribly surprising, but still disappointing.
