Japanese-market vehicle ads during the 1980s reached levels of macho-ness never dreamed of by marketers in the United States, where you might have seen some weak-metal guitar antics now and then. In the Land of the Rising Sun, you’d get ads with turbo noises that sounded better than the engine of a Mitsubishi F-2 fighter plane, ads with tiny econoboxes consuming the Solar System with their 100,000 horsepower, or nightmare Space Vixens kicking dudes in the face to take possession of a Mars Base Cordia. Here’s a JDM commercial for the 1988 Mitsubishi Fuso Canter Dump, a dump truck manned by a dude so macho that he appears to have stepped right out of a Tom of Finland drawing, set to the Canter Dump Theme Song.
