Modern cars use fobs rather than relying on lock and key mechanisms for security, and many are bound by a set range within which they can be used.

While some people try to unlock their vehicles outside of this range with no success, a PC “enthusiast” has claimed that it is possible to do by holding the fob in a particular way.

Taking to TikTok to share his revelation, Matty McTech (@setupspawn), demonstrated how he does it with his own car.

The tech guru claimed that simply holding the fob close to the head is all it takes to unlock a vehicle without being stood close to it.

And drivers who tried the unique tip themselves were stunned when they realised that it actually works.

Speaking to his 4.7 million followers on the app, Matty said: “If you are ever trying to lock or unlock your car but it’s not working because it’s too far away, all you have to do is hold up the key FOB to your head and your brain will act as an antenna giving you way more range than you would normally have.”

In the video, the tech expert can be seen holding the fob just underneath his chin while standing a significant distance away from his car.

He then clicked the fob, at which point the vehicle was successfully unlocked.

Taking to the comments to share their reactions, many peopled were shocked by the revelation.

Some even shared their own tips for car key fob users, including a user called Dalton. He wrote: “Open your mouth and you get a lot more range, I don’t know why it works but it works.”

But others claimed that the trick was “20 years old”, and that they had learnt it from the hit motoring show, Top Gear.

One TikTok user even claimed that the car key hack was referenced in the film La La Land when Ryan Gosling’s character, Sebastian, helps his co-star Emma Stone (Mia) find her Toyota Prius.

In the film, Sebastian instructs Mia to hold the remote key to her chin, just like Matty McTech.

The unusual tip may seem mad, but the science behind it is all to do with the anatomy of the human body.

It works because the head is full of fluid, and liquids are known to be excellent conductors of electromagnetic waves.

When the button on the key fob is pressed, these waves are emitted and in this case, amplified by the capacity of water in the body, which is around 60 percent.

Those who aren’t convinced by the hack could try holding a key fob up to a bottle of water, which has a similar boosting effect by extending the range by several feet.
