Driving laws are set to be changed with the addition of the Highway Code to create a hierarchy of road users. This means those who are most likely to be seriously harmed, such as pedestrians and cyclists, have been given greater priority over other road users.
Lorry drivers are expected to be ranked at the lowest level on the hierarchy.
This could mean they have the greatest responsibility towards all other road users and are more likely to shoulder the blame in the event of an incident.
Because of this, more drivers could be more inclined to purchase vehicle safety devices.
Changes to the rules include drivers being told they must not cut across cyclists going straight ahead, turning into a junction, changing direction or changing lanes.
This makes the requirement for vehicle cameras, sensors and alerts on lorries to eliminate blind spots and prevent incidents even more important.
Emily Hardy, a road safety expert at Brigade Electronics UK, commented on the changes and what it would mean for drivers.
She said: “The introduction of the Highway Code’s road user hierarchy is putting even more pressure on fleet operators, who are already facing severe driver shortages and desperately trying to attract new talent with bigger salaries and more appealing benefits packages.
“However, safety still remains a top priority and the new Highway Code hierarchy will only reinforce this.”

Safety devices such as speed limiters and dash cams could become more popular.
All newly launched cars will legally have to be fitted with a speed limiter after July 6, 2022, in a bid to improve road safety.
Data from the end of 2020 found that UK drivers submit more than 35 dash cam videos to police every day, with a third of submissions resulting in fines or warnings.
The use of dash cams has grown by about 850 percent since 2017, when insurance companies started accepting footage as evidence.
