NIO ups the ante with its Aquila NAD system.
NIO’s recently introduced ET7 will employ NIO’s latest NAD (NIO Autonomous Driving) technology based on NIO Aquila’s suite of sensors and NIO Adam’s powerful computing capabilities.
NIO has built up the NAD full-stack autonomous driving capability including perception algorithms, localization, control strategy, as well as platform software. NIO Aquila features 33 high-performance sensing units, including 11 8MP high-resolution cameras, 1 ultra-long-range high-resolution LiDAR, 5 millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, 2 high-precision positioning units, V2X and ADMS.

Aquila can generate 8GB of data per second and NIO Adam features four NVIDIA Orin supercomputers on a chip (SoCs) with a total computing power capable of 1,016 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS).
For comparison, Tesla’s autopilot uses eight 1.2MP cameras in the Model S and the ET7 will have eleven 8MP cameras. As for computing power, Tesla’s employs two FDS chips with 144 TOPS compared to NIO’s four NVIDIA chips capable of performing 1,016 TOPS. Additionally, NAP will also add the use of a LiDAR system, which Tesla does not use.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been adamant that LiDAR isn’t necessary for fully-autonomous vehicles, a position that isn’t shared by many industry experts.
However, Telsa’s vehicles are available today, and Telsa has already released a version of its Full Self Driving to a small pool of customers for early access testing. NIO won’t be releasing the ET7 for at least another year, sometime in the “first quarter of 2022”.
NIO competitor Xpeng Motors recently announced it will begin using LiDAR in early 2021. When that happens, Xpeng will be the first manufacturer to use LiDAR in a production electric vehicle.

In addition to its powerful NAD system, NIO’s ET7 has a lot to offer and will likely be a serious competitor to Tesla in China. Its dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain has a peak system output of 480 kW (644 hp) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque and will propel the ET7 from 0 to 100 km (0-62 mph) in 3.9 seconds.
The ET7 is also a very slippery sedan and boasts a low drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd and NIO claims the ET7 is designed to meet both China and Euro NCAP five-star safety standards. There will be 70 kWh and 100 kWh battery options available at launch (the same options existing NIO vehicles have), but later in 2022 NIO will introduce a 150 kWh battery option that will have a 1000 km (620 mi) range using the generous NEDC range test.
That should translate to about 433 miles (697 km) on the EPA range scale and about 495 miles (797 km) using the WLTP range rating.
NIO ET7 trims:
- ET7 (70 kWh): 448,000 yuan ($69,185)
BaaS: 378,000 yuan ($58,375) plus 980 yuan ($151) per month
- ET7 (100 kWh): 506,000 yuan ($78,142)
BaaS: 378,000 yuan ($58,375) plus 1,480 yuan ($229) per month
- ET7 Premier Edition (100 kWh): 526,000 yuan ($81,230)
BaaS: 398,000 yuan ($61,463) plus 1,480 yuan ($229) per month
The 150 kWh battery pack option will not be available until late 2022.
