New all-electric Ford E-Transit van revealed

The new Ford E-Transit van gets a zero-emission drivetrain and range of 217 miles

The all-electric Ford E-Transit has been revealed, and the firm’s largest commercial vehicle promises the longest range of any electric van so far, with a claimed WLTP maximum range of 217 miles courtesy of a 67kWh battery and an electric drivetrain that’s fitted in a current Transit’s body.

From the outside, the E-Transit is marked out by a new grille with blue bars, a charging socket in the nose, and E-Transit badging. Under the bonnet there’s a 265bhp electric motor, which means the E-Transit will be the most powerful electric van for sale in the UK. That motor drives the rear wheels, while 430Nm of torque means it has the power to cope with large payloads.

Ford will offer 25 configurations of E-Transit, with the panel van available in a number of lengths and roof heights, while double cab in-van, and chassis cab variants will also be offered. Ford is aiming for a maximum payload of 1,616kg for the E-Transit panel van, with the chassis cab versions offering up to 1,967kg. Since the battery is mounted under the body, the E-Transit has the same cargo volumes as the diesel Transit, with up to 15.1 cubic metres of space for the panel van.

That 67kWh battery is fitted with an 11.3kW on-board charger, so a full charge is possible in just over 8 hours from a suitable source. Using a 115kW DC charger, the E-Transit can be topped up from 15 to 80 per cent capacity in around 34 minutes. In addition, and in a first for the van market, Ford will offer an option called Pro Power Onboard, which provides a 2.3kW outlet for powering tools and equipment using the battery.

Inside, the E-Transit introduces Sync4 infotainment to Ford’s commercial vehicles. Here it features a 12-inch touchscreen as standard, with over-the-air updates, enhanced voice control and sat-nav live traffic information all on offer. Available safety tech includes traffic-sign recognition with intelligent speed assist, plus blind-spot recognition, lane assist, adaptive cruise control and 360-degree cameras. A standard-fit FordPass Connect modem also allows fleet operators to monitor the E-Transit remotely.

The new Ford E-Transit will undergo fleet trials through 2021 in various European markets, before going on sale in spring 2022.
