When the Cars.com editorial team created National Stick Shift Day in 2018, we didn’t necessarily anticipate it actually catching on (though we really, really hoped it would). Nevertheless, in honor of the holiday this year — July 16, mark your calendars! — throughout the month of July, Polaris Slingshot dealerships nationwide are offering free stick-shift driving lessons.

“Driving a manual transmission and feeling the gears shift is simply the most fun way to drive,” said Chris Sergeant, vice president of Slingshot, in a statement.
And while we tend to agree — we decided driving a manual is so fun that it warrants its own holiday, after all — the number of Americans who can drive stick is dwindling.
Slingshot said it hopes to provide an opportunity for people to master the skill in something that’s fun to drive. The lessons take place in three-wheeled motorcycles that look like open-air roadsters and come equipped with a five-speed manual transmission. As a bonus, learning how to drive stick in a Slingshot counts as a test drive, entering you in Polaris’ Summer of Fun sweepstakes.
