London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone was expanded on October 25 and now encompasses all areas within the city’s North and South Circular roads. Any car not exempt from the regulations driving inside the zone will be subject to a £12.50 daily charge to combat its effect on air quality.
This is in addition to the Congestion Charge of £17.50 a day.
The surprise, however, is that a wide range of classic cars are available that qualify for exemption status.
Exemptions include any vehicle more than 40 years old or any modern vehicle with official emissions below a certain level.
For petrol-powered cars, that’s anything post-Euro 4, and for diesels, it’s post-Euro 6.
Euro 4 became a legal requirement in 2005, which means that a large number of modern classics actually remain ULEZ exempt.
Drivers can use Transport for London’s registration plate checker to ensure a chosen car is exempt from the ULEZ charges.
Driving a non-compliant car just once a week would rack up an annual bill of £650 – more than many drivers’ insurance and road tax combined.
According to Hagerty, a car insurance provider for classic vehicles, there are a number of vintage cars which are ULEZ-exempt.

One of the most popular is the Bentley Continental GT, where all models of the six-litre W12-engined grand tourer are free of ULEZ charges.
The Crewe-assembled supercar is one of Bentley’s best selling cars, although it may struggle to fit into London’s parking bays at more than 1.9 metres wide.
Hagerty says that If a car or bike is a “historic vehicle” aged 40 years or older on October 25 then drivers won’t have to pay the new charges.
This is similar to the fact they don’t have to pay road tax or get an annual MOT.
