The rare 1987 AE86 Toyota Corolla was sold for £46,250 by Car and Classic despite being in an original condition with no modifications or upgrades. Car and Classic said it is now the highest recorded price for a car of this type sold at auction, beating the previous record of £29,000 sold in the USA earlier this year.
However, the model was almost left for scrap back in 2006 when vandals keyed the paintwork.
The damage was considered to be too uneconomic to repair by insurers.
However, the owner decided to buy back the car from their insurer as they could not contemplate the vehicle being sent to the crusher.
The model was repaired to “as new” standard without needing any modifications to the original bodywork along the way.
Chris Pollitt, Head of Editorial at Car and Classic said the model was a “survivor” after being close to being “obliterated”.
He said the car would be considered a “legend” after demanding “frantic bidding” from collectors.
He said: “We talk a lot about survivor cars, but this is the true definition of one.
“So many of these ended up as drift or track cars or just rotting away.

“Only the true adoration of this ‘86’ prevented the insurance company from obliterating it after incurring paint damage.
“The frantic bidding in the dying minutes confirmed the demand for a car that is now rightly cast as a legend in its homeland.”
The car achieved such high demand due to its “time-warp” status having been owned by one caring owner.
Except for the paintwork mark, the car has been otherwise kept in excellent condition.
