The simple rule could catch out hundreds of drivers who may share the towing responsibility on a family holiday. The rule could also catch out those who change their number plates and forget to purchase an updated design for their trailer.

GOV.UK said drivers “must” display the same number plate as the towing vehicle.

They also warned drivers who failed to display number plates correctly could be punished with fines of £1,000 expected.

They said: “Your trailer must display the same number plate as the vehicle you’re towing it with.

“If you’re towing more than one trailer, the number plate must be fixed to the trailer at the back.”

In most cases, caravan number plates are very affordable and can be purchased from just £10.99.

Some firms charge slightly more but offer both front and rear caravan for ultimate protection.

Experts at Number 1 Plates confirmed there was “no difference” between car and caravan plates making them easy to build and install.

They confirmed drivers could change plates on a caravan if they are towing it with a different vehicle but this must be “road legal”.
