The electric Porsche Taycan family is expanding with a pair of GTS variants—including a third body style, sort of—all of which are making their global debut on the eve of the 2021 L.A. auto show.
The 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS sedan pumps more power into the sedan that introduced the family of electric vehicles in 2019, in keeping with the sporty GTS treatment applied to gas-fed Porsche models.
The 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo is that kind-of, sort-of third body style in the Taycan universe. It is essentially a lowered and recalibrated version of the Taycan Cross Turismo with the same interior dimensions and glass roof of its sister wagon. Think of it as having the same exact body as the Cross Turismo, a faux-crossover Taycan wagon, essentially, but the ride height of the sedan. It pulls from the parts bin of the wagon and sedan, with few all-new parts, but the calibration of this new setup is 100 percent unique.
These are the first electric vehicles to get the GTS treatment. And the Sport Turismo is only available at the GTS level.
Last Taycan Additions For A While
Porsche wants to keep expanding the Taycan family—half of its sales are to buyers new to the brand and demand for the lifted Cross Turismo wagon has been triple what executives expected. The GTS variants will be the last additions for a while. It will be four or five years before we see another body style and it won’t be a coupe—sorry, 928 resurrection hopefuls—more likely a rally car. If a coupe joins the lineup, it will be many years out, says Porsche CEO Oliver Blume.
Why offer two wagons? Blume says there is room for the variant, Porsche is not slicing the bologna too thin. The Cross Turismo is the all-weather choice if you might need to travel on some dirt roads or simply dig the appearance of a Subaru Outback-style Porsche wagon. The Sport Turismo GTS has the same all-wheel drive and underbody protection but appeals more to the owner who wants to tear up dry pavement; you know, the parents who hit Angeles Crest with a baby seat in the back. With a lower center of gravity, it should corner flatter and feel slightly more direct. Power delivery is not supposed to push the limits like the Turbo, but rather aims for the sweet spot with more concentrated in the middle of the power band; even so, it still has a top speed of 155 mph, same as the Taycan 4S.
Difference Between 2022 Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo
Visually, the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo differs from the Cross Turismo slightly: the rear spoiler is body color and there is no rugged-looking plastic cladding over the wheel arches. The GTS treatment is for the buyer who wants a splashier car with just enough differences to be noticeable while still being financially attainable.
While the suspension and performance equipment come from the same shelf as the top Taycan, the calibration and tuning are bespoke to the GTS. They also have a deeper and louder version of Porsche’s Electric Sport Sound, a noise generator that hopes to replace some of the aural urgency the Taycan gives up by not having an engine.
Both Taycan GTSs use the same permanent magnet single-speed front motor, plus a larger rear motor and two-speed rear transmission to manage the 590 horsepower with Launch Control. That slots the GTS models between the 462-hp Taycan 4S and 670-hp Taycan Turbo. Porsche says they both can skedaddle to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.
Battery and Range of GTS Taycans
Providing the juice is Porsche’s 93.4-kWh Performance Battery Plus and like the rest of the family, the GTS members share the 800-volt architecture for faster charging at speeds up to 270 kW. The Taycans can charge from 5-80 percent full in 22.5 minutes.
EPA range estimates are not yet available, but the original 2020 Taycan received a disappointing 201 miles for the Turbo and 192 for the Turbo S. Engineers continue to work to improve range, but the GTS variants aren’t expected to deliver any big breakthroughs in this area.
Standard equipment includes an adaptive air suspension, torque vectoring, and the Sport Chrono Package with the multifunctional steering wheel. You must pay extra if you want Dynamic Chassis Control Sport, rear-wheel steering, or 21-inch wheels in satin black.
The newcomers use the same red six-piston front caliper and four-piston rear caliper braking setup as the Taycan 4S but with larger front rotors. Brake rotors with tungsten carbide coating (a super-hard surface treatment that lessens brake dust) as well as ceramic composite brake rotors are optional.
How to Spot the 2022 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo
The Taycan GTS has a SportDesign front fascia and side skirts with a GTS logo, and glossy black side window trim. The rear diffuser also has a high-gloss black inlay. Its 20-inch wheels are borrowed from the Turbo S, albeit with a satin-black finish. The Porsche logo on the rear light strip is black and the headlights up front are tinted in black. Getting the theme? The base of the exterior mirrors also—you guessed it—black.
If you like the feel of being behind the wheel of the current Taycan, take heart because the GTS versions have the same sport seating position and familiar multi-screen dash. The GTS has a unique Race-Tex interior package that is based on the GTS treatment Porsche has given other models in the lineup. There are GTS logos, door sill guards, and black accents—for an extra charge you can get a package with red or chalk contrast stitching and matching seatbelts which are definitely the coolest part, and matte carbon trim.
The Sport Turismo has 15.7 cubic feet of rear cargo room, expanding to 42.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded forward. And being an EV, there is storage up front in the 2.9-cu ft frunk, or front trunk.
Cool New Panoramic Roof
An optional new panoramic roof with liquid crystal film lets you adjust how much light comes in from clear to matte, a welcome addition for sunny climes so the battery is not working overtime to keep the vehicle cool. The system automatically switches to matte when the vehicle is turned off. This is available on both the wagon and sedan.
Standard features Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Porsche Connect with a charging planner continue.
Pricing starts at $132,750 for the Taycan GTS sedan and $134,650 for the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo. Orders are being taken now for delivery starting in April 2022.
