Here it is, folks: the 2022 Kia Sorento. Despite the fact Kia’s yet to formally announce changes to its fourth-generation midsize SUV for 2022, the Korean brand still chose to display its mildly updated Sorento at the Chicago Auto Show. Emphasis on mild, as the application of Kia’s new logo to the Sorento’s nose, tail, wheel centers, and interior bits are the only easily identifiable changes to the vehicle for the new model year.
Otherwise, we expect the 2022 Sorento to largely carry over its 2021 counterpart’s comfort, convenience, and mechanical bits, including its standard 191-hp 2.5-liter I-4, optional 281-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, and available 227-hp gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. The latter setup, however, may offer all-wheel drive for 2022, given the AWD badging on this Sorento Hybrid show car’s tailgate—the 2021 Sorento Hybrid is a front-drive-only affair.
We failed to notice a second charging door on the rear fender of this show car, which leads us to believe it’s not motivated by the Sorento’s 261-hp plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. Nevertheless, we anticipate the PHEV powertrain and its estimated 30 miles of all-electric driving range will find its way to the United States in the 2022 Sorento.
We’ve reached out to Kia for more information about the 2022 Sorento. For now, though, we can only state with confidence that the 2022 Sorento appears to be the latest Kia model to incorporate the brand’s new badging.
